Maybe you’ve heard about the latest changes in the requirement for accessible restroom signage – that geometric shape on the door should be blank. No man, no woman, no other! Where it gets confusing: there is no requirement for providing gender pictograms or the international symbol of accessibility on the geometric symbols of the door sign. Whether you can display them, however, is up to the interpretation of the building inspector at the local level. Most of the inspectors we’ve had come through our recent restaurant, retail and office projects this year have required us to have signs without the pictograms. It’s best to replace whatever sign currently on the door with the blank sign shown in the accompanying image.
